The first Rustaq Fort was built by the Persians in the pre-Islamic period. It became the capital of the Ya'ruba dynasty and was subsequently re-built in the 17th Century. Oman's second largest fort,it sits at the foot of Jabal al Akhdar on the edge of the Batinah Plain.
