Dun Carloway is one of the best preserved examples of a broch or fortified tower in Scotland. Dating back to around 100BC,the broch consists of two concentric drystone walls, the inner one rising perpendicular and the outer one slanting inwards. It is thought that the brochs were built to provide protection against Roman slave traders.
