From the Cassini probe’s swan song to the solar eclipse, the cosmos is trending. Whether we’re talking about the night sky and our light pollution problem or sending reusable rockets to Mars, it seems the future of the human race may lay out beyond the stars. Or that’s where our imaginations are taking us, with the reboot of Lost in Space, a female Doctor Who and recent blockbusters like Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor Ragnarok. Even Pantone’s COTY (Ultra Violet) feels like it’s from the final frontier.

Scientists recently detected signals from the earliest stars, 180 million years after the Big Bang. What or who is out there? And is there another place for humans somewhere in the universe? In an attempt to discover more, NASA just successfully launched their Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (or TESS for short) on top of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket; TESS is designed to find exoplanets, specifically planets that orbit stars in our solar neighbourhood that could be habitable or even harbour life.
